Glossary
Short definitions of the words the hub uses. The Operating Manual shows each of these in action.
People
Veteran — The person the flight is for. Every Veteran has a status, an application date, service history, and (once flying) a Guardian and a Mission.
Guardian — The companion who travels with a Veteran for the whole day. A Guardian may be family ("family pairing") or a community volunteer, and may be paired with up to three Veterans on one flight.
Volunteer — Hub staff on the day: bus leaders, medical, photographers, and so on. Volunteers are added to a Mission with a role.
Travel Buddy — Two Veterans who asked to travel together. "Buddy Up" on a Veteran record links them so bus assignment keeps them side by side.
TLC — A flag on a Veteran who needs extra care on the day (mobility, medical, or emotional). It surfaces on the roster, the manifest, and bus lanes.
Waiting and priority
The Line — The ordered list of Veterans who have applied and are waiting for a flight. Order follows the national priority ordering — terminal-illness and WWII first, then Korea, then Vietnam, then later eras — and within a tier, application date.
War era — The conflict a Veteran served in, derived from service history. When service dates are missing the hub estimates an era and marks it Estimated.
Burndown — The chart on The Line that projects how many upcoming flights it takes to reach a given Veteran.
Flights
Mission / Day of Flight — One trip. The hub calls the record a Flight; the Honor Flight® network usually says Mission. Both mean the same thing.
Flies On / Returning Date — The departure day and the day the group is home. A different Returning Date makes the flight multi-day and turns on room assignments and hotel stays.
Gather Time — When Veterans and Guardians must be at the departure point. It is the anchor the itinerary counts forward from.
Training Class — The pre-flight orientation for Guardians. The date and time appear on the flight and in Guardian communications.
Capacity / Tickets — How many Veterans the flight can carry and how many seats are booked.
Bus lane — A bus on the Bus Assignments board. Lanes carry a color and a derived last-name range so bus leaders can call names in order.
Flight leg — One airline segment (out or back). Legs live on the Reservations tab with the bus and hotel bookings.
Itinerary — The minute-by-minute plan for the day, built from a template and cascaded forward from the Gather Time.
Manifest — The exportable roster for the day (CSV, XLSX, or printable PDF), with Guardians listed first.
Communications
Email List / SMS List — A saved set of recipients. Lists store intent (for example "everyone on Mission 44 plus these two people") and are re-resolved when you send.
Sub-list — A named subset inside an Email List, for example "Bus 1".
Send — One outbound message to a list. Every send has a ledger showing each recipient's delivery status.
Broadcast — An SMS send. Handsets that share a number are collapsed so one household gets one text.
Alert List — An opt-in SMS list the public can join with a keyword, filed with the carriers as a toll-free program.
10DLC / Toll-free verification — The carrier registrations that let the hub text from a real number. Their status is shown on Program & numbers.
Accounts
Hub — One Honor Flight® organization's private workspace, at its own
address (for example demo.flyveterans.org).
Team Member — Anyone with a sign-in to the hub. Members carry roles such as Admin, The Line viewer, and Communications sender.
Magic link — The passwordless email sign-in the hub uses.
